Moving from Strides to HabitForge

Strides tracks numbers and dated targets as well as habits, with an on-track pace. HabitForge tracks whether you showed up, so a target of 12 books by June has no place here.

Should you move at all?

If most of what you track is a number heading for a date, stay. HabitForge has no targets of that kind.

Also check what HabitForge does not do. HabitForge has no iOS app, no home screen widgets and no health sync, and nothing guides you through replacing one habit with another.

The move, step by step

HabitForge has no importer, so this is done by hand.

  1. Get your list out. Export your data if you are on Strides Plus, where that feature sits, and keep the file. HabitForge cannot read it. Otherwise list the habits by hand.
  2. Sign in. Open HabitForge and sign in with Google. There is no password to set.
  3. Add your habits. Add only the daily and weekly habits, by hand. A bad habit you tracked goes in as break. Leave the dated goals behind. Create a habit has every field.
  4. Write the loop on the ones that matter. Add the cue, routine and reward to two or three habits first. The rest can stay as a name until you need more.
  5. Set up what surrounds them. Accountability partners on Strides work through iCloud on Apple devices. Here, a challenge works on Android and the web, between anyone with an account.
  6. Keep both for a week. Your old numbers stay in Strides. In HabitForge every rope starts as a thread on your first check-in, and that first week is when it looks thinnest.
