Create a habit

A habit in HabitForge is something you want to build, break, or maintain, tracked on a schedule you choose. Creating one is a single form: give it a name and a schedule, and optionally describe the behaviour using the habit-loop fields.

The basics

  • Name — what the habit is, in plain words. "Drink water after waking" is clearer than "Be healthy".
  • Category — used to group and colour your habits.
  • Typebuild a new habit, break an old one, or maintain one you already have.
  • Schedule — how often the habit should happen (for example daily, or specific days of the week).

That is enough to save. The habit appears on your dashboard, ready for its first check-in.

The habit loop

HabitForge is built around the cue → routine → reward loop from Charles Duhigg's The Power of Habit, extended with two more fields:

  • Cue — the trigger. "After my morning coffee."
  • Routine — the behaviour itself.
  • Reward — what you get out of it, in your own words.
  • Craving — why you want it.
  • Investment — what you put in to make it stick.

These fields are optional, but filling in a concrete cue and reward tends to keep a habit alive longer than the name alone.

Tips

  • Start small. Two habits done daily beat ten done once.
  • Write the cue as an "after". Anchoring a habit to an existing routine gives it a reliable trigger.
  • Phrase the reward as identity. "I am someone who finishes what they start" is more durable than "get fit".
